Beauty Escape During Quarantine
As our bodies turn toward flight or flight mode, it is said that we are expending a lot of energy to stay alive even though we have all been sent to spend our time inside. I had spent the earlier part of being confined to the inside in deep denial. After coming to grips with the fact that me being able to spend time outside sans mask would not be for the foreseeable future, I decided to look inward for answers. This path to introspection led me to re-examine my self care routines that focused around beauty! (Its taurus season and I’m really feeling that indulgent spirit overcome me.)
To be quit honest, the beauty market is oversaturated and its hard to come by content creators who want to educate and not try to sell you a product. As such, I decide to share a few (namely two) of the resources that I have been tuning in with to keep me on trend with staying up to date in the beauty space and tending tp to the largest organ on my body, my skin.
First there is LABEAUTYOLOGIST - I truly enjoy her content. As a self proclaimed science girl, I enjoy the fact that LA incorporates the science behind why the products work and the order it should be applied in based on the ingredients. Just this week, I spent over 45 minutes watching her videos and learned a lot more on a practice that I currently have incorporate into my regimen -oil cleansing. Her recent video really changed my behavior when it comes to oil cleansing and even solidified me wanting to be a Fresh girl. I love their products and they customer service is A-1. Y’all I called them up a few months ago for something and a person picked up … no automated service. I was shocked asf.
Up next is Darian Symone, - What I like most about Darian’s content is that she does this wonderful thing of tying beauty with pop culture and politics, as she coins it. I started following her a few years ago on Instagram when she wrote and reviewed beauty products. Within the recent year, I have definitely seen her transform into an authority on beauty culture. One of her recent pieces that I read was on how hair styling for Black women has been the most prominent way for gaining financial independence. The piece followed young women in college who were doing hair as a means to pay for school. The piece was definitely a game changer in my eyes as it did a good job at highlighting our #BGM (black girl magic) and our tenacity to survive and thrive when our backs are up against the wall.
So get your glow and implement oil cleansing into your regimen! Treat this practice as a way of instituting self care during a time of social distancing and quarantined life.
