Taurusxfoodie ~ Black Dollars Matter !
Growing up, I did not have the privilege of being hip to financial literacy. Entering college in 2006, my mindset normalized that taking out student loans and debt was apart of the American experience. Towards the end of my undergraduate experience, 2009 to be exact, I recall a few of my friends putting some of their work-study money into stocks. During this time period we were probably making 10 bucks an hour but I thought I was balling! Some friends were obsessed and felt the need to check the movement of their money daily, eventually pulling out when they felt it was going down. See, they didn’t understand the power of longevity and discipline. I myself also didn’t understand a darn thing so I opted not to invest. I would say that this is a mini regret of mine :-( .
A few years later after graduating, with only student loan debt, I decided to get another credit card. I was working full time and figured that I could swing the payments. The limit on my card was 10K and in less than a year, I ran that mother up! If you ask me what I spent it on, I couldn’t tell you. (Well I could, some of it may have been spent on traveling and eating lmao).
By the end of that year, I looked at that balance and I just remember it creating a lot of stress, uneasiness and anxiety for me. The mindset of the past that debt was normal no longer resonated with me and by some divine intervention, new terminologies and mindsets began to enter my life. I learned about a growing debt free movement that anchored on creating Financial Independence Retire Early (FIRE). I soon realized that the stress created by this debt was unnecessary and did not have to be my reality. My eyes opened some more, my reality could be freedom and this started with financial freedom.
The current climate in our country is on edge. In 2020, Blacks in America still have to fight for equality. A lot of times this fight for equality is often overshadowed and other causes are pushed to the forefront. Now is not the time to continue to push the fact that the lives of Blacks in America do not matter to the back burner because our lives do matter, we are worthy! My agenda on improving the lives of blacks in America has always been to leave the country and create a Wakanda. Lol, knowing that this may not be a reality, I push the agenda on creating communities of our own that support economic empowerment that continue to keep the Black dollar in our community longer than the 6 hours it currently spends in our communities. My dream is to be in a place where we are creating sustainable solutions that tie in group economics and wealth building though the creation of equity.
So what is equity? I always assumed it was like equality but according to Investopedia, the equity I am talking about also known as “owners equity as it is called represents the amount of money that would be returned to a company shareholders if all of the assets were liquidated.” Other groups have done it, they understand it?! What can I do to further drive home educating more of the collective on these topics. How to get them engaged? How to get my people who have ancestors who were continually robbed from the inception of this country from the beginning of the inception of this country have constantly been robbed of freedom and when we have looked to create this for ourselves it was destroyed. But that’s okay we are resilient! So I have decided to use my platform to start a collection of Black Financial Educators that use their platforms to share information on creating financial freedom. I have found many of the people on this list helpful during my journey. _____________________________________________________________________________________________
