A few years ago, thanks to the lovely people at Yelp I got passes to a festival called Food loves Tech. I didn’t know what to expect at the expo but I was intrigued by the name. When I arrived there was so much going on. I got to try food from vendors who were dealing with sustainability. I tried samples at companies who were starting out and are now sold at Trader Joes and Whole Foods (like Partake Cookies) .
So this is the backdrop to this series: Food X Tech. There are so many cool apps and products in the food space and some folks may not know about them. I want to share them with you as they cross my eye and pique my interest!
For this month, I wanted to highlight this app called Shef. Think Uber eats for at home chefs. I think the idea is brilliant. In fact, the other day I went to a Ghanian restaurant with a friend and was not pleased with the food. I then had this thought come over me that food from a particular culture is often served best homemade. A lot of times the restaurants just don’t get it right. Holla if you hear me!
So back to Shef. You log into the app and pop in your zip code. Your zip code opens you up to a wealth of local chefs that cook cuisines like Chinese, Vegan Southern, African and Columbian to name a few. There was so much to choose from at my finger tips. I opted to go with Haitian food as I am of Haitian decent and had been craving it. The last time I had homemade Haitian food was when my Grandma was alive. Her cooking is amazing - I feel her cooking is what birthed my food snobbery. Literally none of her other siblings or family members can cook food like her; it’s like it skipped a whole generation - though my dad has shared that his sister makes some bomb as food.
So I order my Haitian food from Shef G and select dishes that I don’t often see at the Haitian restaurant and had recalled my grandma preparing in her kitchen underneath my childhood apartment. You have to order the food a few days before you want it but thats okay because it gives you enough time to prepare your home like a dinner party to receive these yummy eats.
Dang … I didn’t take photos. I have videos though. Check out Taurusxfoodie for deets on the yumminess.
Let me know if you give Shef a try. You can use my code for some credit to your account: https://shef.com/refer/asiahc … just copy and paste :-)
