A Taste of Solo Travel: Mexico City
A few days ago, my iPhone so nicely reminded me of my first solo trip in 2018 with a beautifully curated video. As I was watching the video, I was instantly reminded of the fear and excitement that came up as I approached actually going forward with this solo travel.
Solo travel had been on my mind for quite some time as I knew I had to #seesomeworld on my terms. After stalking Demetrius Lucas’ IG posts and stories for a few weeks, I decided that CDMX (abbreviation for Mexico City apparently the locals do not like it lol.) was the destination. It appeared safe for a female solo traveller like myself and if you don’t know this already about me, I love me some Mexican food (it did not disappoint). **Fun Fact: Mexico City is the oldest capital city in the Americas.
My trip was slated for a few days after my solar return on May 1st. To be honest, no real planning was done on my part except for booking of accommodations and scoping out places I wanted to eat at.
When I arrived, I got into my very inexpensive Uber that drove me about 4 miles to my accommodations for a total of 5 USD! The air smelled rich of culture in Mexico City and I truly felt welcomed by the ancient Aztecs who once inhabited the region.
My Air BnB was located a few short steps from Zócalo, which is the common name of the main square in central Mexico City . The Zocalo is massive and very beautiful. I stood in awe of all the old style architecture and expansiveness of the square. Mexico City is home to over 150 museums, at the time I could have sworn I read or someone shared with me that it has the most museums in the world located in a city. During my trip, I probably visited about 4 museums, including La Casa Azul which is a pretty popular location in CDMX being that it is the home of the esteemed artist, Frida Kahlo.
Now on to the food! On my feed, I shared a few spots in which I had some delicious shit (excuse my French) however my appetite went away after day 3. It was the oddest thing. After some research, I discovered that Mexico City was several feet above sea level, comparable to Denver, Colorado. So what I was experiencing was a possible side effect of altitude sickness. Whatever the case, O was so happy that I got to enjoy those days of cuisine joy. How I Can describe the food is as if you are literally eating it homemade. As of recent, I have begun to see, feel and taste the difference in ethnic, cultural (don’t kill me here not sure the right word to use) food that is cooked at restaurant vs when its prepared homemade. And baby, let me tell you in CDMX it was like homemade.
I recommend Mexico City with my whole heart. There is so much more that I want to share. On the weekends, there are beautiful street fairs with food and art galore. Omg the street art! Amazing. You will definitely be busy and well fed.
Any questions about Mexico City feel free to reach out! Check out my reel on IG to see some more fun I had during my visit.
